The summary opposite concerns the reversed interpretation
of the
rune Sowelu. As this is the same as the upright interpretation,
in practice there is no "reversed" meaning of this rune.
|
This is one of those runes for which the "reversed" interpretation
is the same as the "upright" interpretation (for further
explanation of this see the page about reversed
runes).
As appears for Sowelu (Upright):
The rune Sowelu (also known as Sowilo) is one of the most positive
runes in the Futhark.
It represents the sun and is said to be the origin of the word "sun" (several
other runes are also said to be the origin of modern words, see
for example Jera and Dagaz). The importance of the sun for ancient culture across the world is well-known.
This powerful source of energy in the forms of light and heat also signifies
good fortune, health, energy, abundance, and victory. Ancient Nordic tribes
represented the sun in the form of a shield or wheel that was associated with
transformation, protection and nurturing - all of which can be understood in
terms of the changing seasons that result from the earth's rotation around
the sun.
Sowelu also represents wholeness, not merely completion - but rather
the acquisition of a true concious awareness of all aspects of
oneself. The presence of this rune in a casting may indicate
a period of recharging and regeneration (think "solar panel").
Finally, and especially if there is stress around the circumstances
of the casting that includes Sowelu, know that this is a supportive
rune and a positive sign that goals and good fortune are coming within
reach very soon.

Note that each rune may be referred to differently
in different texts. One reason is that some books prefer to use
the traditional meanings as the names/titles
of the runes (as we do here). Other books refer to runes using
the Old English name, their Old (High) German names,
or their modern English letter equivalent. There are also other
sets of symbols that are associated with runes. These are more
difficult to represent electronically because they do not all correspond
to standard alpha-numeric characters. More about the runes as
listed here.
Other terms used to refer to this rune
are mentioned below:
The twenty-fourth
rune in the series listed on the left is Wholeness (Sowelu
or Sowilo).
The name of this rune in English is "sigel". It is associated with
the
modern English character/sound "s". The Germanic name of this rune
is "sowelu".
