This is one of those runes for which the "reversed" interpretation
is the same as the "upright" interpretation (for further
explanation of this see the page about reversed
runes).
As appears for Hagalaz (Upright):
Generally the rune Hagalaz represents the phenomenal power
of the elements and disruptive natural
forces. Think of the damage that can be done by
a short but intense hailstorm flattening whole fields of crops
in minutes - that's the essence of
Hagalaz! (Conversely, Hagalaz may represent just an interruption
or delay when it is cast among a group of mostly positive runes. Remember
that it is always important to take into consideration the context
of a rune.)
Many books about runes associate Hagalaz with hailstones, hailstorms,
and hail itself (in its context as weather - dense
balls of ice pelting down from the sky, usually in relatively short
bursts). This association can be explained in terms of the above example
of fields being flattened by hailstones and it can also taken further.
Some texts talk of hagalaz encompassing "absolute potential energy" in
the form of ice (hailstones) and fire (delivered to earth with punishing
speed).
The rune Hagalaz may serve as a warning of possible disruption on
your path ahead. This may be due to the natural elements or it may
concern circumstances beyond your control adversely affecting a job,
business situation, or relationship. Whatever challenge is referred
to is also an opportunity for growth.
The rune Hagalaz may herald challenges followed by changes -
yet these changes may bring freedom and forms of liberations previously
unimagined. Tomorrow may be radically different from today.
Now is not the time to take great risks. There may be shake-up
on the way and the emergence of new strength through personal growth.
