02 - Partnership - Gebo

The Rune Gebo is about Partnership and the theme of a Gift.

The summary opposite concerns the upright interpretation of the
rune Gebo. Theoretically, the reversed interpretation is the same so in practice there is no "reversed" meaning of this rune.

The rune Gebo signifies partnership or partnerships. These may be of a romantic or a business nature. Either way, the shape of the rune emphasizes its meaning as the "X"-shape is formed by two strong lines supporting each other. Understand from this that partnerships related to the subject about which this rune is cast may involve mutual support and benefit both parties.

Gebo can also signify a gift and is sometimes described as the gift of "freedom", from which all good things flow. (Some texts give Gebo the English name "Gift" rather than "Partnership". Either name is accurate as Gebo has both associations.)

When a gift is indicated it is often a timely receipt, perhaps in exchange for something else such that the arrangement benefits all concerned.

Perhaps one of the most memorable points about the rune Gebo is that it is the only rune still is common use today. It is often used beneath signatures on greetings cards to represent a "kiss": A helpful aide-memoir that this rune signifies "relationships" (or see it used on a gift-tag to recall that Gebo also signifies a gift).

Gebo is a positive rune - it always has the same positive meaning.

The meanings of the runes.

Note that each rune may be referred to differently in different texts. One reason is that some books prefer to use the traditional meanings as the names/titles of the runes (as we do here). Other books refer to runes using the Old English name, their Old (High) German names, or their modern English letter equivalent. There are also other sets of symbols that are associated with runes. These are more difficult to represent electronically because they do not all correspond to standard alpha-numeric characters. More about the runes as listed here.

Other terms used to refer to this rune are mentioned below:
The second rune in the series listed on the left is Partnership (Gebo).
The English name of this rune is "gyfu". It is associated with the modern English character "x". The Germanic name of this rune is "gebo", which is sometimes written with accents not used in the standard English character set so many textbooks written in standard English call this rune simply Gebo.
